Social Justice Quarterly Discussion Group - Thursday, June 12th

"Staring directly at the Northern Ireland checkpoint, briefcase in hand about to be opened, Chilean political refugee Rene Castro poised himself for a battle. British soldiers drew their rifles immediately and ordered him to halt. 'What's in the case?' they demanded. 'My weapon,' he answered. Their rifles cocked as he opened the case and withdrew his sketchbook."

Join us and create a dialogue about the current issue's article The Art of Social Justice by Maria X. Martinez. We will discuss how art can promote, inform, and shape social change. We will explore how community art can engage participants and influence change, as "nowhere is there more potential and more need for art than here and now."

Founded in 1974, Social Justice is a quarterly nonprofit educational journal that seeks to promote human dignity, equality, peace, and genuine security. The journal has framed its vision of social justice with an understanding of the international dimensions of power, inequality, and injustice.

The current issue of Social Justice examines the role of various media -- the visual arts, theater, and performance -- in the social justice struggles of communities as diverse as American Indians, Bahamians, North American and Mexican feminists, working-class women in England, and LGBTQ communities of color in New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area. Be part of the discussion this THURSDAY, JUNE 12 starting at 6 PM!
