Featuring Slammed: The Coming Prison Meltdown


The August 2008 issue of Mother Jones offers a comprehensive look of the prison system in America in their feature Slammed. Articles of interest in this section include "Inside America's broken-and-broke prison System," "Welcome to the Age of Incarceration," "Kids doing time for tantrums," and "The booming immigrant detention industry." We'll address some of the issues brought up in the feature which include: the cost of prison system, the increase in prisoners incarcerated, prison labor, women giving birth in prison, and the prison systems in Texas, Georgia, California, and Kansas. We'll discuss prison reform and begin to look at how prison systems may vary from state to state. We'll focus on key issues including how the amount of money funneled into the prison system how takes away from money that can be used for roads, schools and health care. In addition, we'll discuss how or if we are properly preparing inmates to reenter society once they leave prison.
