Youth Media Screening & Discussion

September 12, 2008 – Insight Arts invites the community to a Youth Media Screening & Discussion about issues youth faced during the Insight Arts' Summer Youth Arts Programs on Friday, September 19 from 7 to 9 PM at the CENTER FOR NEW POSSIBILITIES.  The evening will feature photography, art, and videos produced by youth.  All ages.  $5 donation.

Two youth produced documentary shorts will be screened, "Quince (15)" (Fifteen) and "No Importa Que…" (No Matter What…).  The documentaries were produced during Media Del Monte (MDM), an intensive six-week media-literacy/training program based in the rural South Texas town of Encinal, and explore youth views about issues unique to rural South Texas.  Underserved Latino youth learned all aspects of video production and at the same time investigated social aspects unique to their rural community.  MDM is a new program of Hecho en Encinal, an Insight Arts associated group.

"Quince" (Fifteen) explores the historical Mexican tradition of the Quinceañera, a young girl's rite of passage into womanhood, and what that tradition has transformed into today.  Specifically, the story takes place in Encinal where Quinceañeras are a community event. (9 minutes)

"No Importa Que..." (No Matter What...) explores issues about immigration in the USA, specifically the South Texas border.  Mexicans from the town Encinal are interviewed and provide unique insights to issues relating to immigration including their families' experiences, work, the border wall debate, and first hand immigrant experiences of crossing the Rio Grande. (15 minutes)

Screenings of the documented presentations of the Insight Arts' Summer Youth Arts Programs Dance Discovery and Degrees of Freedom Project will also take place.  A discussion will follow the screenings.

In conjunction with the screenings, The Common Cup Gallery presents a visual exhibit of photography taken during the summer youth programs: Dance Discovery, Degrees of Freedom Project, Theatre of the Oppressed, and Media Del Monte, all supported by Insight Arts.

The CENTER FOR NEW POSSIBILITIES, located at 1505 W Morse Avenue, is a space coordinated by Insight Arts , a contemporary arts organization dedicated to increasing access to cultural work that supports progressive social change.  With a unique organizational model Insight Art's is able to engage in community based, regional and national work.  Donations are appreciated.
