WOMEN OUT LOUD presents the phabulous NIKKI PATIN
Slam poet and performer extraordinaire Nikki Patin headlines Women Out Loud! on September 25, from 7 PM to 9 PM at Insight Arts' space, the Center for New Possibilities, 1505 W. Morse. Women Out Loud is the longest-running open mic in Chicago for women and women-identified writers.
At the event Nikki will be performing excerpts from her critically-acclaimed "Phat Grrl Revolution" tour before she leaves for London in October to kick off the European leg of the tour. She describes it as "my image of phat life, Black life, queer life, grrrl life, human life....I've often struggled to find acceptance in the performance arena in the U.S., but this trip is not about finding acceptance. It's about digging deep to tell the truth, the whole story, no matter what."
Nikki's performance credits include opening for Jill Scott at the Metro, Patricia Smith and Alix Olson, and Zapp!, of Roger and Zapp. Nikki was also featured in a special live performance, produced by HBO and hosted by Michael Eric Dyson, and on the fourth season of HBO's Def Poetry Jam. As a teaching artist, she has taught hundreds of workshops at various high schools, colleges and universities on performance poetry, body image, sexual assault prevention and LGBT issues.
In 2004, Nikki was voted one of Chicago's six most fabulous 20-somethings by Red Eye newspaper. In 2006, Nikki was voted one of 30 under 30 most influential LGBTQ people in Chicago by Windy City Times and took the gold medal in the Gay Games International LGBT poetry slam. In the fall of 2007, Nikki taped a segment for 'The Greatest Living Writers Project', an online archive of performances and interviews by living writers that's made available to over 8 million high school students.
An OPEN MIC for women and women-identified poets, writers, and spoken word artists precedes Nikki Patin's performance hosted by Melissa Woo. As always, men may applaud and cheer. $15 suggested donation, $8 for open mic performers ($10 & $5 respectively will go toward funds for Nikki Patin's "Phat Grrl Revolution" Tour).
