FEELING BEAUTIFUL ALL OVER - Starting May 19

Feeling Beautiful All Over weaves together the humorous, harrowing and ultimately uplifting stories written and performed by Sisters Rising, an ensemble of formerly incarcerated women, including Yolanda Burgess, Jacalyn Brown, Bobby N. McLaurin, Marilyn Love, and Gloria Muldrow, under the direction of Maia Morgan and Lindsay Porter. This piece spans the life experiences of the ensemble members, from the joy and pain of childhood through first love and adolescent rebellion to devastating loss and eventual recovery. In prison, below rock bottom, each woman discovers a determination to survive and thrive and accepts the challenge to rekindle her self-esteem. The sisters rise phoenix-like to embrace that which makes them and all of us truly beautiful: an abiding love for ourselves.
Sisters Rising was established in 2007 as an offshoot of Still Point Theatre Collective’s Persephone Project, which brings theatre workshops to incarcerated women in Illinois prisons. These workshops are safe spaces where incarcerated women can be free to tell their stories, build community, and explore together. At the end of a three to four month process, the participants present a performance, written by themselves, for invited guests, prison volunteers, and their fellow inmates. This performance gives them a forum to express their views, and an opportunity to share with the larger community the experiences and challenges of incarcerated women.
