DOING DEMOCRACY - September 2009
DOING DEMOCRACY
August 22 - September 30, 2009
Insight Arts is happy to present DOING DEMOCRACY, a group exhibition, in The Common Cup Community Gallery from August 22 to September 30, 2009.
DOING DEMOCRACY exhibition grows out of a class taught at the School of the Art Institute by Insight Arts' Executive Director, Craig Harshaw. The course, Doing Democracy, aims to provide students with a historical and ideological overview of democracy, public life and schooling. The purpose of exploring this extensive body of knowledge is to help build a foundation for multi-cultural arts education practice.
Required texts for the Doing Democracy course include:
"Conquest: Sexual Violence and Native American Genocide" by Andrea Smith (2005) South End Press;
"The Darker Nations: A People's History of the Third World" by Vijay Prashad (2007) The New Press;
"Democracy Unrealized" edited by Okwui Enwezor, Carlos Basualdo, UteMeta Bauer, Susanne Ghez, Sarat Maharaj, Mark Nash, and Octavio Zaya(2002) Cantz Editions;

"Other People's Children: Cultural Conflict in the Classroom" by Lisa Delprit (2006) The New Press;
"Pedagogy of Freedom: Ethics, Democracy and Civil Courage" by Paulo Freire (1998) Rowman and Littlefield
The artwork featured in this exhibition was created by students in Craig's class as creative responses to the texts studied in class. Artists include: Amanda Adelstick, Lulua Alosami, Laura Atkins, David Barista, Ewa Bloch-Trojanowicz, Meghan Buritt, Natalie Calleros, Maryam Gaber, Elena Goetz and Caitlin Ostrow.
As part of the exhibition, a series of events will take place throughout the month of September at the Center for New Possibilties (1505 W Morse Ave., one block west of the Morse Red Line in Rogers Park), a space coordinated by Insight Arts, a contemporary arts organization dedicated to increasing access to cultural work that supports progressive social change.
