2:00 PM: Complex Conversations inspired by USSF 2010
The days leading up to the 2010 United States Social Forum were fraught with tension because of the revelation that a rightwing Zionist organization STAND WITH US had been granted permission by the national organizing committee to lead a workshop on LGBTI liberation issues in the Middle East. National organizers ultimately argued that the group had violated USSF protocol by not being transparent about their actual political agenda and "uninvited" the workshop. During the weeks of intense dialogue and debate many larger issues were raised including a.) the integrity of a progressive process involving a commitment to inclusion of diverse center-left ideological positions, b.) the political history of Zionism, c.) the rise of "pink-washing" (using Gay and Lesbian civil rights issues as a front for the promotion of imperialism and capitalism), d.) the role of self-determination among oppressed peoples in this case the importance of LGBTI Arab/Muslim communities defining their own liberation struggles and e.) the persistence of both Islamaphobia and heterosexism within progressive discourse.
Insight Arts invites interested center-left identified folks to join us in a lively panel and community discussion inspired by this controversy on Sunday August 22, 2010 at the Center for New Possibilities beginning at 2 pm.
